Analysis:
1. make up one’s mind: make a decision e.g. I haven’t made up my mind where to go yet
. 2. range: vary between certain limits e.g. Their costs ranged between $40 and $60 a day.
3. conscious adj. aware, realizing sth. e.g. He was badly hurt, but he remained conscious. self-conscious adj. : shy or nervous unconscious adj.: unaware consciousness n. : state of being conscious be conscious of 意识到,感觉到e.g. If you are conscious of something, you notice it or are aware of it. He was conscious of the faint aroma of aftershave.
4. focus on vt.to concentrate one.g. He suddenly focused his attention on foreign policy. The management are focusing on the project.
5. be absorbed in 全神贯注于,专心于e.g. She has been absorbed in a horror fiction. Time passes quickly when you are absorbed in reading a good book.
6. impress vt. : make sb. feel admiration and respect e.g. The scenery is strongly impressed on my mind. I’m very impressed with the scenery.Phrases: impress sth on/upon one’s mind把…印在脑海里impress sb with…给某人留下深刻印象

8. at one’s best in one's best state or condition e.g.This is an example of his work at its best. Intensive reading (interpretation of the text):
1. Research shows we make up our minds about people through unspoken communication within
4 seven seconds of meeting them. Meaning: Research shows within the first seven seconds when we meet someone, we form our opinion about him or her through unspoken communication.
2. Consciously or unconsciously, we show our true feelings with our eyes, faces, bodies and attitudes, causing a chain of reactions, ranging from comfort to fear. Meaning: Whether we are aware or unaware of it, we use our eyes, faces, bodies, and attitudes to express our feelings. This causes a sequence of various responses such as comfort and fear.
3. You are the message. Meaning: Your eyes, face, body, and attitudes---all the things send information about you to others.
4. I’ve helped them make persuasive presentations…Meaning: I’ve helped them give convincing speeches…
5. You were committed to what you were talking about and so absorbed in the moment you lost all self-consciousness. Meaning: You were giving all your attention to what you were saying and you were so interested in it that you lost all your worries about what you looked like, how you behaved, and what others thought of you.
6. Many how- to books advise you to stride into a room and impress others with your qualities. Meaning: Many books that offer advice on how to make a good impression tell you to walk into a room with quick, long steps and make others feel admiration and respect for your good qualities.
7. They instruct you to greet them with “power handshakes”and tell you to fix your eyes on the other person. Meaning: They teach you to give people strong handshakes when you say hello to them and tell you to look at the other person.
8. They communicate with their whole being; the tones of their voices and their gestures match their words. Meaning: They communicate not only with their speech but also with their eyes, faces, bodies, attitudes, etc.; the tones of their voices and their gestures are consistent with their words.
9. Lighten up. Meaning: Become more relaxed and less serious.
10. Usually they are either brooding or talking a great deal about themselves. Meaning: Very often, they are either thinking or worrying a lot or talking a lot about themselves.
Text Structure: Part I (paragraph 1,2): This part tells us what time you make the most important
5 impression on others or others leave the most important impression on you.
Part II (paragraph 3-15):
This part answers the questions of how to make a good impression on others
